Knowledge and attitudes toward handling of sharps exposure among nursing students at the University of Health Sciences

Abstract

Objective: To determine the level of correct knowledge and positive attitudes toward the management of sharp object exposure and to identify associated factors among nursing students at the University of Health Sciences.

Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 278 second-, third-, and fourth-year nursing students who had completed the Infection Prevention and Control course at the University of Health Sciences and were present during the study period from September 2025 to November 2025. Students who agreed to participate in the study were included.

Results: The proportion of students with correct knowledge regarding the management of sharp object exposure was 71,2%, with the highest rate of correct responses observed in knowledge related to the prevention of sharp object injuries (90,65%). The proportion of students demonstrating positive attitudes toward the management of sharp object exposure was 87,4%. Analysis of associated factors revealed a statistically significant relationship between academic year and knowledge level (p = 0,013). Third-year students accounted for the highest proportion of students with good knowledge (36,76%), followed by fourth-year students (25,81%) and second-year students (19,82%).

Conclusion: Nursing students demonstrated good knowledge and positive attitudes toward the management of sharp object exposure. However, several knowledge gaps remain and should be addressed through continuous education and regular knowledge updates.
