Knowledge and confidence of nurses regarding fall prevention in patients at Hoan My Sai Gon Hospital in 2024

Abstract

Background: Falls are among the most common adverse events in hospitals and represent a key indicator of patient safety and nursing care quality. Nurses’ knowledge and self-efficacy play a critical role in fall prevention.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and self-efficacy of nurses regarding fall prevention and to identify associated factors at Hoan My Sai Gon Hospital in 2024.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 118 nurses from nine clinical departments. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, including an 11-item Fall Prevention Knowledge Test and an 11-item Self-efficacy for Preventing Falls – Nurse scale using a 6-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 with descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, t-test, and ANOVA to examine associations between variables.

Results: The mean age of participants was 31.97 ± 5.83 years, and 89.8% were female. Most nurses held a university degree (66.1%) and had at least five years of work experience (72.8%). The proportion of nurses with adequate knowledge of fall prevention was 69.5%. The mean self-efficacy score was 4.98 ± 0.49 on a 1–6 scale, indicating a high level of confidence. Knowledge was significantly associated with working unit, educational level, and type of nursing training. Self-efficacy was significantly associated with working unit, age, and educational level (p < 0.05).

Conclusions: Nurses demonstrated moderate knowledge and high self-efficacy regarding fall prevention. Targeted training programs and continuous professional development are recommended to improve knowledge and enhance confidence, thereby strengthening patient safety and reducing fall-related incidents in hospitals.
